As a part of Free Software initiative for schools Gnowledge Labs and Swecha have helped out a group of volunteer teachers in equipping them with the Sugar Labs stack. The details of the event are as follows.
Srinidhi Internation School, Hyderabad has adapted a village school(Azeez Nagar Primary and Upper Primary School) as a token of social responsibility and decided to doante 30 XOs, popularly called as OLPCs(One Laptop Per Child). The school will dontae 30 laptops for the kids of Azeez Nagar school during the months of June/July. To strengthen this, there was a training workshop of four days on creating computer literacy to the volunteer teachers of the government school. The training was held by Dr.Nagarjuna from gnowlegde labs along with the volunteers of Swecha. The training went on for 4 days for all the teachers with hands on XOs. Most of the activities present in the stack of Sugar labs were demonstrated and a space where people can explore and learn was created. The XOs for the training were provided by Digital Bridge Foundation from Mumbai. The team also visited the Azeez Nagar school and showed the kids the laptops. Some kids also did amazing things on the XOs. Srinidhi school was focusing on giving the laptops to the kids of 3rd standard. The school had a strength of 196 in all and the kids were with full of happiness by the sight of laptops, cameras. After an interaction of around 45 minutes, the bell rang fast and it was meant for lunch. All the kids got ready with their plates for the mid-day meal and there were some children with no plates, sharing the plates with others e.t.c.
On the third day of the workshop Dr. Nagarjuna gave a talk at Srinidhi Institute of Science and Technology(sister concern of Srindhi International School) which was co-organised by Sree GLUG. The college has an active GLUG working close with Swecha. They have 2 GNU labs in their college. The talk was oriented for the staff of the college and was intended to provide an awareness on Free Software and benefits of using Free Software. All the talk was video recorded and will be uploaded here in the site soon. Inspite of college day cultural celebrations huge number of people turned out to the seminar on Free Software.
The next day was an ending session of the workshop for teachers. Swecha has taken up the localization project of Sugar Labs and will be shipping a localized Sugar desktop as its project.
