Seminar on

"Internet Surveillance and Internet Freedom"

Industry, research, academics and society have progressed enormously in the past two decades, largely owing to the availability of free internet. The availability of enormous information and its easy transmission via the internet has facilitated the progress achieved thus far.

However, some of the recent happenings have brought to fore a widespread debate amongst internet and computer users in general and intellectuals and activists in particular. If SOPA and PIPA in the United States of America made the future of internet look bleak, the more recent and infamous Section 66(A) of the IT Act in India raised serious doubts about its constitutional validity.

The latest, in the efforts to keep a tab on digital information, the PRISM scandal clearly exposes the hypocricy of some Corporations which, while assuring users data privacy on the one hand clearly joined hands with some security agencies to provide them with the users sensitive data. These acts remind us of the infamous Holocaust.

The need arises to keep the internet free and keep all vested interests away from trying to control the internet which, like all other forms of knowledge, should always be free.

In this context, Free Software Movement of India (FSMI) is organizing a seminar on 'Surveillance in the Digital Age' on 13th July, 2013 from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. Swecha, part of FSMI would be hosting this seminar at Somanadri Bhupal Memorial Hall, Gachibowli 'X' Roads, Hyderabad.

Mr. Roy Singham, Founder and Chairman of ThoughtWorks would be delivering the seminar. Mr. Y. Kiran Chandra, General Secretary, FSMI and Mr. D. Bhuvan Krishna, General Secretary, Swecha would also be addressing the gathering.

FSMI and Swecha cordially invite netizens, students, academicians, employees, NGOs', intellectuals and all progressive and democratic minded people who would want the internet to remain under people's control to participate and make the event a grand success.
