AUCE GLUG Inaugurated in Andhra University

Swecha organized a one day workshop on free software in the Department of Computer Science and Systems Engineering, Andhra University College of Engineering in the department seminar hall on July 24, 2010. All the 115 students from the department who have attended the workshop along with the teaching and non teaching staff have been immensely impressed with the concept of free software, and the students have expressed their willingness to form a GLUG (GNU Linux Users Group) in the college. Under the aegis of Swecha, the AUCE Glug has been formally inaugurated by the Head of the Department, Prof. M. Shashi amidst loud applause from the audience.

The students were introduced to free software in the morning session. The various projects taken up by Swecha have also been emphasized upon. The students as well as the faculty demonstrated great curiosity during the interactive sessions.

Swecha... now in Vizag too!!

Swecha is making forays into other major cities in Andhra Pradesh.

Swecha has been instrumental in propagating the importance of Free Software among various sections like Students, academicians and working professionals. There are hundreds of students who are active members of Swecha’s activities throughout the city of Hyderabad.

As part of its programme to educate students of various engineering colleges outside Hyderabad, Swecha organised an introductory session for students of various engineering colleges in and around Visakhapatnam (Vizag) on 11th of this month. The students were greatly inspired by the advantages of Free Software and are now on the path to establish GLUGs in their respective colleges.

In continuation with the session, students and professors of AU have come forward to conduct a 1 day workshop in their college and also inaugurate Andhra University Glug on 24th July 2010. As part of the preparations, Swecha trained the students of the college in migrating their Computer labs to "GNU Labs" on 17th July 2010.

Swecha organized a five day workshop on various Free Software technologies from June 30, 2010 to July 4, 2010 at MLR Institute of Technology, Dundigal, Hyderabad. 40 Students from various Engineering and MCA colleges across the state attended the workshop. The workshop dealt with training the students for these 5 days on - Preparing GNU Labs (Free Software Labs), Scripting Languages like Shell & Python, Content Management Systems (Web Technologies) like Drupal and Graphics Tools like Gimp and Inkscape and the Art of Programming. These sessions were taken by experts from Industry who are working on respective technologies which proved to be an asset for the participants.

The main aim of the workshop was to give an insight of how a Free Software developer community works to the students. Free Software Movement of India supported the workshop conducted by Swecha. We believe this workshop will help students to become passionate developers and contribute to ever growing Free Software community. The workshop also included a session on evolution of web as Web 1.0 to Web 3.0. Along with the technical sessions various non-technical sessions were also conducted on concepts like copyrights and patents.
